To facilitate the dust free assembly of automotive instrument clusters, Pektron are building an BS EN ISO 14644 Class 7 (Class 10,000) clean room within the middle floor of the ‘D’ site manufacturing facility. The facility comprises of three rooms. A changing room, decanting room and the clean room itself.
The changing room is divided into ‘dirty’ and ‘clean’ sides separated by a low step over bench. Operators store and change into clean room work wear in this area. As well as defining the dirty and clean areas the step over bench provides a handy seat when changing from outdoor shoes to clean room shoes. Strict procedures will be in place for changing prior to entering the clean room to prevent dust and other contaminants being carried into the clean area.
The decant room is used to prepare material ready for assembly in the clean room. It is intended Material for use in the clean room will usually be triple packaged as follows; inner bag, outer bag and carton. The carton is to protect the material from transit damage and is removed prior to entering the factory. The outer bag is removed in the decanting area immediately prior to the material entering the clean room. This decanting operation takes place in the ‘dirty’ side of the decanting room. The ‘dirty’ and ‘clean’ sides of this room are separated by a counter which the material is passed over. The inner bag is removed in the clean room immediately prior to the contents being used.
The air in the clean room is pre-filtered through HEPA filters and temperature controlled before being blown into the room to create a dust free and slightly
pressurised environment. The pressure prevents dust from entering the room through the personnel and goods doors. Some of the pressurised air is allowed to pass into the decanting and changing rooms, raising the pressure in these areas too, also reducing dust ingress. Within the clean room surfaces have been selected to easy to clean and eliminate dust traps.
All the corners within the room are , benches have circular frames, electrical trunking and even light fittings are curved in profile to prevent dust traps and to make them easy to clean. Dust producing materials i.e. paper cardboard etc will not be permitted in this area.
Assembled products leave the clean room through an air lock.
Installation of this facility is due to be complete by August 1st 2008.
